Survey purpose

The purpose of this survey is to obtain information on selected asphalt roofing products that are produced, shipped and exported along with their destination of shipments by province. Data collected by this survey provide an indicator of the economic condition of the producing industry and can serve as input to study market share and industry trends. Your information may also be used by Statistics Canada for other statistical and research purposes.

Data-Sharing agreements - To reduce respondent burden, Statistics Canada has entered into data-sharing agreements with provincial and territorial statistical agencies and other government organizations which must keep the data confidential and use them only for statistical purposes. The details of these agreements as well as information on record linkages were provided to you in the form of a letter with the January mail out. Instructions

Quantity made during month – Should represent the gross production from your machines less the amount of waste prior to shipments, unless the waste can be used for other purposes and has a commercial value. Report all production which qualifies under these terms regardless of where or to whom sold, except seconds. Seconds are to be considered as a scrap until sold and should be added to the production for the month in which they are shipped.

Quantity shipped during month – Report quantities of all your materials (both those manufactured by you and those purchased from other manufacturers or imported) shipped to customers in Canada or to other countries. Do Not Include Sales To Other Firms In Canada Producing Asphalt Roofing Products.

Regional breakdown of domestic shipments:

The Atlantic provinces include Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick; British Columbia includes the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

Descriptions

  1. Asphalt saturated shingles: include all shingles produced on the shingle machine.
  2. Smooth surfaced organic felt roll roofings: include all smooth roofings as produced on the roofing machine and all similar products, such as Cap sheets, Base sheets, etc. Roll roofings surfaced with granules less than No. 11 gauge are to be classified as smooth roll roofings, viz., 60# coloured roofing.
  3. Mineral surfaced organic felt roll roofings and sidings: include all roll roofings surfaced with granules No. 11 and coarser and all roll type sidings produced completely on the roofing machine.
  4. Asphalt saturated organic felts: include organic and asbestos felt base saturated products which are not coated. DO NOT include glass fibre roofing felts impregnated with bitumen.
  5. Asphalt saturated and/or coated sheathings: include all paper base saturated sheathings and also saturated and coated sheathings from paper base.

1 Metric bundles – sufficient material to cover 3 sq. metres when applied.

2 Metric rolls – content of roll approximately 10 sq. metres.
