Introduction to Statistical Sampling (Course code 0412)

Purpose

To provide a basic understanding of practical sampling. Sampling methods and principles of are covered with a minimum of formulas and technicalities. The course focuses on the various methods, with their advantages and disadvantages.

Benefits to the participants

Participants will become familiar with the principles and basic methods of sampling, with emphasis on the application to Statistics Canada surveys.

Target population

Employees with little training in statistics who wish to acquire a basic knowledge of sampling and who have not taken course Survey Skills Development Course (STC0405).

Course outline

Population, units, sampling frame, probabilities, censuses and sample surveys, sources of error, precision, accuracy, simple random sampling, stratification, systematic sampling, sampling with probability proportional to size, cluster sampling, multistage and multiphase sampling, estimation, sample size, non-probability sampling.
