About the Data Science Fellowship Program

Statistics Canada's Data Science Fellowship Program aims to expand data science capacity across the Government of Canada by recruiting and placing data science specialists known as Fellows.

The recruitment-based program provides departments with a single point of access to hire pre-qualified data science specialists for specified terms to advance their data science capabilities, while providing a rewarding experience for Fellows.

Fellows work on specific projects and share their knowledge and best practices in the areas of analytics platforms, business intelligence, data management and Big Data to inform and improve government programs and policies.

The job of a Data Science Fellow

On a day-to-day basis, a fellow will:

  • lead projects developing machine learning models, building data pipelines, or engineering data science platform components
  • lead on and provide technical expertise on complex data science related tasks and projects involving, but not limited to, large volumes of data and unstructured data (administrative, web, remote sensing, etc.)
  • optimize business value of data through experimentation and application of modern statistical methods and techniques, such as Machine Learning, to solve complex business problems
  • manage the gathering, analysis, design and development phases of data science projects
  • produce and present complex information and analytical results through simple reports, briefings and presentation material using data visualization tools for senior management and clients
  • build partnerships with subject matter specialists, clients and stakeholders
  • participate in data science communities of practice, working groups and technical reviews

What the program offers

Under the program, Fellows are hired by Statistics Canada and then assigned to work within a specific department on a specific project. What project Fellows work on depends on their skills set and the project's requirements. Statistics Canada matches suitable candidates to projects and departments.

Length of assignments range from 12-24 months on average. Once a Fellow has completed their first assignment, they have the option to be matched to another suitable project within the government.

Throughout the duration of the program, fellows have access to a Statistics Canada peer and communities of practice and expertise to collaborate with and discuss assigned projects.
