New motor vehicle registrations, fourth quarter 2024

In 2024, there were 1,852,738 new motor vehicle registrations in Canada, an 8.0% increase from 2023. Ontario (699,289) led in total registrations in 2024, followed by Quebec (477,761) and British Columbia (219,177).

In 2024, multipurpose vehicles continued to lead in new registrations among vehicle types, accounting for 62.9% of new motor vehicle registrations, up from 59.7% in 2023. In addition to leading the composition of new registrations, multipurpose vehicles (+13.9%) saw the largest year-over-year increase in 2024, followed by new registrations for vans (+10.6%). Meanwhile, new registrations of passenger cars (-2.4%) and pickup trucks (-1.4%) decreased.

New registrations increased across all fuel types in 2024 compared with 2023, with the largest growth being observed in plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) (+52.8%), followed by battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) (+40.7%), hybrid electric vehicles (+24.6%), diesel-powered vehicles (+7.7%) and gasoline-powered vehicles (+1.3%).

Zero-emission vehicles charge ahead, representing over one in seven new motor vehicle registrations in 2024

There were 270,985 new registrations of zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) in 2024, accounting for just over one in seven of all new motor vehicle registrations (14.6%). This was an increase from 2023, when ZEVs made up 11.0% of all new registrations. In 2024, new registrations for ZEVs increased by 43.6% from 2023 and by 119.2% from 2022.

Among ZEVs, 74.6% of new registrations in 2024 were BEVs and 25.4% were PHEVs. Multipurpose vehicles accounted for 8 in 10 ZEV registrations (80.0%), followed by passenger cars (13.9%), pickup trucks (5.2%) and vans (0.9%).

Over 30% of all new registrations in Quebec are zero-emission vehicles

Among Canada's three largest provinces, the portion of ZEVs were highest in Quebec, accounting for 30.9% of all new registrations in the province in 2024, followed by British Columbia (20.9%) and Ontario (8.1%). Quebec (54.4%) accounted for over half of all new ZEV registrations nationally, followed by Ontario (20.9%) and British Columbia (16.9%).

More ZEVs were registered in Quebec (+84.9%), Manitoba (+84.7%), New Brunswick (+61.9%), Saskatchewan (+29.6%), Prince Edward Island (+22.5%), Ontario (+12.9%) and British Columbia (+5.0%) in 2024 when compared with 2023.

Note to readers

Estimates for Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia and Alberta are currently unavailable because of contractual limitations of the existing data sharing agreement. However, they are included in the Canadian total.

This survey looks at registrations of new motor vehicles in the provinces and territories in a given year.

Estimates for British Columbia include the territories.
