Statistics Canada is being recognized internationally for being pretty good at sharing. This month's edition of the StatCan Blog highlights the agency's record on making sure its data are open and accessible to all.

Open Data Watch, an international agency based in Washington (District of Columbia) ranked Canada 8th among 173 national statistical offices in terms of making data widely accessible. This was the first time Canada was included in the rankings.

Canada's high ranking was the combination of two factors: coverage and openness.

The first, coverage, looks at the depth and breadth of the agency's information holdings based on a common set of basic data expected for all countries.

The second, openness, examines whether data are readily available without a cost to users and in easy-to-use formats.
