Canada's 150th year is drawing to a close, but there is no need to toss out the candles just yet. Statistics Canada will reach its centennial in 2018, and the agency is taking advantage of the celebrations to prepare for the next 100 years and to take a look back at the past 100 years of fascinating stats on Canada.
Before we take on a full century, however, this month's edition of the StatCan Blog is revisiting 2017 and presenting a brief overview of what statistics told us about Canadians throughout the year. From census results, to household debt, to organized crime, to the sharing economy, Statistics Canada expanded its scope to cover more and more aspects of Canadian society and economy.
In 2017, Statistics Canada launched new data visualization tools, like the Canada and the World Statistics Hub, to help Canadians take advantage of the detailed information it produces. In addition, the agency is preparing to further expand its statistical programs in 2018, tackling topics as diverse as housing, cannabis, the low-carbon economy and tourism.
