Statistics Canada and Transport Canada have launched a new website to provide Canadians with online access to comprehensive statistics and measures on the country's transportation sector.

The Transportation Data and Information Hub offers an array of information on the rail, road, air and marine modes. It also provides new performance indicators, such as port dwell times, and truck wait times at border crossings.

Updated monthly, the Hub features data, analysis, maps, infographics and performance indicators. The interactive tools can be used to examine, for example, the cargo handled at specific Canadian ports, the number of international travellers entering Canada by border crossing, the types and volume of freight shipped by rail and truck, as well as the number of passengers travelling through Canada's airports.

By harnessing Transport Canada's analytical work on transport performance measures, the Hub reflects Statistics Canada's shift toward a more collaborative model to ensure Canadians have access to a wide range of statistics. As well, with links to information gathered by other governments, industry and academia, the Hub truly represents a one-stop online destination for transportation data and metrics.

  Note to readers

The proposal for a transportation information hub was announced in the 2017 federal budget. Statistics Canada continues to work with Transport Canada in expanding coverage as well as access to data from numerous other sources, including international transport organizations. In addition, Statistics Canada is producing new data products to fill information gaps in transportation statistics. Last month, the agency released data from its new Transportation Economic Account and Canadian Freight Analysis Framework.
