A new dataset is now available as a result of an exploratory initiative aimed at enhancing the use and harmonization of open building data from municipal, regional, and provincial sources. An outcome of this exploratory work is a first version of the Open Database of Buildings (ODB), which contains approximately 4.3 million building footprints spanning across seven provinces and one territory. The purpose of this initiative is to contribute to the creation of a complete, comprehensive and open database of buildings in Canada.

The ODB contains eight variables for each footprint: data provider, latitude, longitude, area, perimeter, census subdivision unique identifier, and census subdivision name. The open microdata used to create the ODB were downloaded from 61 different data providers from January to August 2018.

For more information on this initiative and to access the data, visit the Open Building Data webpage.
