The energy sector is a major economic driver—in 2019, it generated over $150 billion in economic activity, representing approximately 7% of gross domestic product. It also employed over 280,000 Canadians.

To help Canadians, governments, the industry and other stakeholders across the country better understand this key sector, Statistics Canada, working in collaboration with Natural Resources Canada, Environment and Climate Change Canada, and the Canada Energy Regulator, is proud to announce the launch of the Canadian Centre for Energy Information (CCEI).

The CCEI was funded through Budget 2019, with $15.2 million allocated over five years (plus $3.4 million per year ongoing) to create an independent and trusted source of energy information for Canadians and to support evidence-based discussions, government policy development and business decisions regarding the energy sector and its impact on the economy, society and the environment.

The CCEI will address long-standing challenges in accessing Canada's energy information by serving as a user-friendly hub with access to all energy-related information and data, such as production, consumption, international trade and much more. This initial launch of the website includes information from over 50 different sources, including all levels of governments, academics, the industry and international organizations.

As the project matures over the years, the CCEI will provide updates on new energy information products and opportunities to participate in creating a virtual data centre, which will give researchers a secure collaboration platform for using microdata. The CCEI will also provide information that is standardized and accessible in a range of formats. As the CCEI grows, we will continue to collaborate with stakeholders and listen to data users, to ensure it remains user-friendly and keeps improving.
