Key facts on the English language in Quebec and on the French language in New Brunswick and Ontario in 2021

Released: 2023-08-22

Today, Statistics Canada is releasing three new fact sheets that describe the situation of the English language in Quebec and the situation of the French language in New Brunswick and Ontario in 2021, along with certain trends observed since 1991.

These fact sheets are based on data from the 1991 to 2021 censuses of population, together with the 2011 National Household Survey.

The fact sheet on the English language in Quebec provides information on the evolution of the population that can conduct a conversation in English, or have English as their first official language spoken, mother tongue, language spoken at home or language used at work. In addition, it contains information on schooling in English in primary and secondary schools, on the usage of English among recent and established immigrants, and on the mobility and birthplaces of persons whose first official language spoken is English.

The fact sheets on the French language in New Brunswick and Ontario provide information on the evolution of the population that can conduct a conversation in French, or have French as their first official language spoken, mother tongue, language spoken at home or language used at work. In addition, they contain information on schooling in French in primary and secondary schools, on the usage of French among recent and established immigrants, and on the mobility and birthplaces of persons whose first official language spoken is French.

Facts sheets that describe the situation of the French language in 2021 in the other Atlantic provinces, in the western Canadian provinces and in the territories are also available.
