New motor vehicle sales data for Canada and the provinces are now available for January. This is the first release to include a breakdown of new motor vehicle sales by zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) fuel type.

New motor vehicle sales increase in 2024

In 2024, there were 1,918,861 new motor vehicles sold in Canada, up 9.5% (+166,464 units) from 2023. However, sales of new motor vehicle units in 2024 remained slightly below (-2.2%) the levels observed in 2019, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Zero-emission vehicle sales

In 2024, ZEVs accounted for 13.8% (264,277 units) of units sold and 16.0% ($17.3 billion) of total sales at the national level. At the provincial level, Quebec accounted for 53.9% of total ZEV units sold, followed by Ontario (21.4%) and British Columbia and the territories (16.8%).

In 2024, Quebec had the highest ZEV adoption rate; ZEVs represented just over 30% of vehicles sold. British Columbia and the territories (20.7%), Prince Edward Island (7.8%) and Ontario (7.4%) followed Quebec as the provinces with the highest proportions of ZEV sales.

Unit sales of almost all vehicle types increase from 2023, with the exception of passenger vehicles

Sales of new passenger cars continued to decline in 2024, experiencing a drop of 2.0% (-5,033) in units sold compared with 2023. Consumers continued to turn towards light trucks in 2024, with units being up 11.7% compared with the previous year. Additionally, more buses (+30.1%) and heavy trucks (+1.4%) were sold in 2024 compared with the previous year.

Sales in dollar terms increase for all vehicle types, except passenger vehicles

In dollar terms, total new motor vehicle sales increased 10.8% in 2024 compared with 2023. Sales of buses (+29.6%) had the highest increase in 2024, followed by light trucks (+12.8%) and heavy trucks (+1.0%). Sales of passenger cars were relatively unchanged compared with the previous year.

The term "zero-emission vehicle" (ZEV) refers to any motor vehicle that has the potential to produce no tailpipe emissions. The ZEV category includes battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.
