Direct health measures of Canadians, 2007 to 2019
Released: 2025-04-15
The Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS) Direct Health Measures Interactive Dashboard is now available. This tool allows users to explore data across 31 key health measures, including anthropometry (e.g., height, weight, and body mass index), cardiovascular health and fitness (e.g., blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels), and diabetes-related measures (e.g., blood glucose).
Based on previously released data from cycles 1 to 6 of the CHMS, the Dashboard allows users to explore the results of direct health measures collected from Canadians aged 3 to 79. These data provide valuable insights into the health of Canadians from 2007 through 2019, supporting research and public health initiatives.
Later this year, the Dashboard will be updated with the latest data from Cycle 7 of the CHMS, which was in collection from November 2022 to December 2024.
Starting on April 1, 2025, Cycle 8 of the CHMS launched in Brockville, Ontario. From April 2025 to early 2027, the survey team and temporary examination centre will visit 16 sites across the provinces to conduct household interviews and collect direct health measures from selected respondents.

Note to readers
The Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS) is the only ongoing nationally representative data source for direct health measures in Canada. The CHMS provides insight into the health conditions and behaviours of the Canadian population. The survey is designed to gather information that will help improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of illnesses, and promote the health and wellness of Canadians.
The target population for the CHMS consists of persons 3 to 79 years of age living in the 10 provinces. The observed population excludes persons living in the three territories; persons living on reserves and other Indigenous settlements in the provinces; full-time members of the Canadian Forces; the institutionalized population; and residents of certain remote regions. Altogether, these exclusions represent approximately 3% of the target population.
The Dashboard includes data from all cycles of the CHMS: cycles 1 (2007 to 2009), 2 (2009 to 2011), 3 (2012 to 2013), 4 (2014 to 2015), 5 (2016 to 2017) and 6 (2018 to 2019).
Data for the CHMS are available in the Research Data Centres.
