Data provided is used to prepare industry financial statements for the Canadian business sector and as an input into the calculation of gross domestic product, the national balance sheet and Canada's international investment position. This information is used by all levels of government, the private sector, analysts and the general public to understand current economic conditions.

Your information may also be used by Statistics Canada for other statistical and research purposes.


Collection period:

The regular Quarterly Survey of Financial Statements collection period is year round on a calendar quarter basis. Collection starts 30 days after calendar quarter end.

Electronic questionnaire and electronic file transfer for bank schedules (record layouts)

Confidentiality

Data are collected under the authority of the Statistics Act, Revised Statutes of Canada, 1985, Chapter S-19.

By law, Statistics Canada is prohibited from releasing any information it collects that could identify any person, business, or organization, unless consent has been given by the respondent, or as permitted by the Statistics Act. Statistics Canada will use the information from this survey for statistical purposes only.

Data sharing agreements and record linkage

Data sharing agreements

To reduce response burden, Statistics Canada has entered into an agreement under Section 12 of the Statistics Act to share information of this survey with the Bank of Canada. The Bank of Canada has agreed to keep the data confidential and to use it only for statistical and research purposes. 

Statistics Canada will then share information from the ES, AS, PS, QS, BS, MS, CS-2 and CS-3, S1, S2, and S3 bank schedules with the Bank of Canada. There is no right of refusal with respect to sharing the data with the Bank of Canada. In addition to being collected under the Statistics Act, the information is collected pursuant to the Bank of Canada Act. The Bank of Canada will use the information in accordance with their legislation.

Record linkage

To enhance the data from this survey and reduce response burden, Statistics Canada may combine the information you provide with data from other surveys or administrative sources.
