This survey collects information to better understand the issues that impact the sexual and reproductive health of women aged 18 to 49 in Canada. Topics include menstruation, sexual health and behaviours, birth control, pregnancy intentions, as well as access and barriers to care for miscarriage, stillbirth, ectopic pregnancy and abortion. The survey also collects information about access to a regular health care provider, as well as gynaecological surgeries and procedures.
Even after agreeing to participate in the survey, you may choose not to answer specific questions where you feel uncomfortable providing a response.
Results from the survey will be used by researchers, all levels of government and other organizations to assess and inform equitable program and policy development to better support women’s sexual and reproductive health.
Your information may also be used by Statistics Canada for other statistical and research purposes. In addition, information from partially completed or unsaved questionnaires may be retained and used.

Data are collected under the authority of the Statistics Act, Revised Statutes of Canada, 1985, Chapter S-19. Your information will be kept strictly confidential.
Data sharing agreements and record linkage
Data sharing agreements
To avoid duplication of surveys, Statistics Canada has signed agreements to share data from this survey with provincial ministries of health and the Institut de la statistique du Québec. The Institut de la statistique du Québec and provincial ministries of health may make this data available to local health authorities.
Data shared with your ministry of health or the Institut de la statistique du Québec may also include identifiers such as name, address, telephone number and health number. Local health authorities would receive only survey responses and the postal code.
These organizations have agreed to keep the data confidential and use it only for statistical purposes.
Statistics Canada will only share the data provided with your consent.
To reduce the number of questions in this questionnaire, Statistics Canada will use information from your tax forms submitted to the Canada Revenue Agency. With your consent Statistics Canada will share this information from your tax forms with the provincial ministries of health and the Institut de la statistique du Québec.
These organizations have agreed to keep the information confidential and to use it only for statistical and research purposes.
Statistics Canada will only share your tax information with these organizations with your permission.
Record linkage
To enhance the data from this survey and reduce response burden, Statistics Canada will combine the information you provide with information from the tax data of all members of your household. Statistics Canada and your provincial ministry of health, and the Institut de la statistique du Québec for Quebec respondents, may also combine the information you provide with other surveys or administrative data sources. Statistics Canada may also combine the information you provide with data from other surveys or administrative sources.

What is the purpose of this survey?
The purpose of the Canadian Sexual Health and Reproductive Survey (CSRHS) is to better understand issues that impact the sexual and reproductive health of women aged 18 to 49 in Canada.

Do I have to take part in this survey?
Your participation in this survey is voluntary. However, as each person selected represents many other people, your participation will help to ensure that survey results are complete.
Health is an important part of everyone’s life. It’s important that we have representation from all sorts of people, including those in good health, if the results of the survey are to be representative.
Who has access to the survey data that you collect?
Access is strictly controlled.
All Statistics Canada employees are responsible for ensuring the security of confidential information. Only employees who need to view confidential files as part of their duties are authorized to access them. A network of physical security systems and procedures protects confidential information against unauthorized access.
There is a data-sharing agreement between Statistics Canada, the provincial ministries of health, as well as the Institut de la statistique du Québec (for Québec data), to share the information collected from this survey. The purpose of this is to reduce the burden on respondents, and to reduce the cost of data collection. The information you provide to us can only be shared with your consent. These organizations are also prohibited by law from disclosing any identifiable information based on data collected by Statistics Canada.
How is my privacy and personal information protected?
How will I know if all this will be kept confidential?
The information is collected under the authority of the Statistics Act. All information collected under this Act must be protected and kept strictly confidential. Statistics Canada cannot release any information to others that would identify you or any member of your household. This means that your information cannot be released to anyone outside Statistics Canada, not the courts, the Canada Revenue Agency, or even the RCMP, without your written consent.
Furthermore, this information cannot be made available under any other law, not even the Access to Information Act.
All Statistics Canada employees take an oath of secrecy. Our computers have a number of security features and employees who do not need to see the information cannot access the information.
When will the results of the survey be available?
The survey results will be made available to the public in the fall of 2025 in many ways, including through the Statistics Canada website (www.statcan.gc.ca), the Statistics Canada Research Data Centres (RDCs), approximately 700 public libraries across Canada and the media.

A new national survey on women’s sexual and reproductive health

The Canadian Sexual and Reproductive Health Survey collects information from women in Canada aged 18 to 49 to better understand sexual and reproductive health and access to services.
Why a survey on sexual and reproductive health?
- Currently, there are no national-level data on sexual and reproductive health in Canada.
- Better information will help governments understand challenges and improve the support they provide.
- Statistics Canada developed this survey with input from Canadians, including clinicians, policy makers and researchers, to support policies and programs.
