Halloween by the numbers

With Halloween around the corner, can you feel the spook-tacular excitement? Every year across the country, many Canadians get into the spirit to celebrate this unique tradition of candy, costumes and decorations. Let’s have a look at the stats behind this day.

The main symbol of this occasion is the pumpkin, cleaned and carved with eyes and a mouth, letting our creativity guide us, in honour of the legend of jack-o’-lantern. But pumpkins are also delicious—in pie or soup, there are countless ways to enjoy it! And it’s thanks to our farmers that we can have pumpkins on our stairs outside and on our table! According to the 2021 Census of Agriculture, there were over 11,000 acres of pumpkin patches in Canada.

Children dressed up as pirates, ghosts, clowns and other characters take to the streets by the thousands to collect their favourite candies. The little ones are always proud to show off their costume! In fact, the number of children of prime trick-or-treating age (5 to 14 years) in Canada was estimated at 4,135,513 on July 1, 2021.
