Arabic Language Day

December 16, 2022, 10:00 a.m. (EST)

Arabic is the fifth most spoken language in the world, following Mandarin, Spanish, English and Hindi.

Here in Canada, Arabic is the mother tongue of 629,000 Canadians, with 286,000 of them speaking primarily this language at home.

Arabic is among the fastest growing languages spoken in Canada, with the share of individuals speaking Arabic predominantly at home rising by over one-quarter from 2016, reflecting recent immigration patterns.

While Arabic is spoken in every province and territory across Canada, you are most likely to hear it in Canada's largest cities.

Arabic is the mother tongue of 220,000 residents of Montréal, the largest concentration of Arabic speakers in Canada, followed by Toronto (121,000 residents).
