Energy use and greenhouse gas emissions in 2022
Canada's economy continued to recover from the shock of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2022, with real gross domestic product by industry growing by 4.1% from 2021. Nationally, overall energy use increased 3.2% and greenhouse gas emissions rose 2.3% compared with one year earlier.

Energy taxes account for over three-quarters of environmental tax revenue in 2021
Of the $31 billion collected in environmental taxes in 2021, $24 billion (78.0%) was attributable to energy taxes. The share of taxes attributable to transportation taxes edged down 1.1 percentage points to 18.8%, while the share of natural resource taxes (2.6%) and pollution taxes (0.6%) were unchanged from 2020 to 2021.

Rising market prices boosts both international assets and liabilities in the third quarter of 2024
Canada's net foreign asset position edged up by $11.6 billion to reach $1,865.3 billion at the end of the third quarter in 2024, following three consecutive quarters of substantial increases. Over the third quarter, Canada's international assets and liabilities grew significantly, driven by the rise in both equity and debt instruments prices.

Number of youth accused of homicide declines in 2023
The number of youth under the age of 18 in Canada who were accused of committing a homicide decreased in 2023. Among cleared homicides, police services reported that 64 youths were accused of homicide in 2023, compared with 95 in 2022. However, the proportion of gang-related homicides committed by youth increased. Over 31% of homicides committed by youth were gang-related in 2023, compared with 16% in 2022.

Household net worth increases in the third quarter of 2024
Households were wealthier in the third quarter of 2024 as their net worth—the value of all assets minus all liabilities—increased $287.7 billion (+1.7%) to $17,287.1 billion. This marked the seventh increase in household net worth in the last eight quarters, a period during which household wealth increased by nearly $1.9 trillion.

New zero-emission vehicle registrations exceed 15% of all new registrations in the third quarter of 2024
In the third quarter of 2024, 75,636 new zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) were registered, making up 15.7% of all new motor vehicle registrations. This represents an increase of 31.8% ZEV registrations from the same period the previous year, when ZEVs accounted for 12.6% of all new motor vehicle registrations.

Sharp increase in police-reported alcohol impaired driving incidents causing bodily harm in 2023
Nationally, police reported 71,602 incidents of impaired driving in 2023, for a rate of 179 per 100,000 population, the fourth consecutive annual decline and the lowest rate on record. However, there was a sharp increase in alcohol (and a combination of alcohol and drug) impaired driving incidents causing bodily harm, with 474 occurring in 2023, the most incidents since 2017.
