With the countdown to the holiday season well underway, children should be about halfway through their advent calendars. If you’re a parent, you’ve probably already been told: only 15 sleeps until the big day!

Whether you share the excitement or dread the holidays, there’s nothing a little Christmas cookie (or eight…) won’t help with. ’Tis the season! Last year, December was the month with the highest sales of cookies, confectionery and snack foods, at $1.5 billion, compared with a monthly average of approximately $1.1 billion.

For many Canadians, the holiday season is a time for sharing gifts of all kinds. Did you pick the name of the most difficult person from the secret Santa hat? Fear not! It’s been said that a batch of homemade cookies may inspire even the scrooge of the family to join in the Christmas carolling.

While hundreds will scour busy shopping centres this month, baking is a great way to slow down, enjoy the warmth of your home and show your appreciation to loved ones. In December 2020, Canadians spent $399.7 million on tableware, kitchenware, cookware and bakeware, and $11.3 billion on food.

Store-bought or homemade, there’s no time like the present to celebrate these delectable holiday favourites!
