Live wire: Electricity data in near real time

May 29, 2024, 11:00 a.m. (EDT)

Ever wondered how much extra electricity was needed to keep all those air conditioners running on a particularly hot day? Or perhaps how much of a drop in generation there was during a power outage caused by a major storm?

For the supercharged data behind these scenarios and many others, the High-Frequency Electricity Data (HFED) visualization tool has the power—from how electricity is generated, to customer demand and grid load, all in near real time.

Developed by the Canadian Centre for Energy Information (CCEI) in collaboration with Natural Resources Canada and the Canada Energy Regulator, the tool uses web scraping to gather publicly available data from provincial and territorial electric utilities across Canada into one central database, in support of the country’s path to net-zero emissions.

New technology sparks quicker data access

Starting today, the tool will also feature an Application Programming Interface (API), technology that allows users to access the data and connect it seamlessly to their own applications.

When accessing data, users can select the period, province and energy variable (such as load, demand, or generation, depending on data availability).

Keeping current on electricity and other data

The HFED tool is now available for use.
