Grab your favourite mug, because September 29 is National Coffee Day—celebrated by Canadians and others around the globe who love a good ol’ cup (or a few!) of coffee.
Whether it’s hot or iced, caffeinated or decaffeinated, or lattes or espressos, we sure drink our fair share of coffee beverages in Canada. To celebrate our love of coffee, we’re grabbing a cup and brewing up some coffee stats.
Millions of kilograms imported every month
In June 2024 alone, Canada imported 20.5 million kilograms of coffee (not roasted or decaffeinated), including both non-organic and certified organic coffee. Over one-third (38.2%) of it came from Colombia, while Brazil (21.4%), Guatemala (12.9%) and Honduras (9.9%) were also major suppliers.
In the same month, Canada imported 5.1 million kilograms of roasted coffee (not decaffeinated) from a wide variety of countries and US states. In a typical month, there are relatively smaller imported amounts of decaffeinated coffee in both non-roasted and roasted categories, along with coffee husks and skins, and coffee substitutes.
The business of coffee
Establishments in the coffee and tea manufacturing industry are primarily engaged in roasting coffee, and manufacturing coffee and tea extracts and concentrates (including instant and freeze-dried), as well as substitutes.
In June 2024, the industry sold and shipped $215.5 million worth of goods (on a seasonally unadjusted basis), down from $255.7 million the previous month.
As of June 2024, the industry had 637 business locations across Canada, up from 591 in June 2023.
The price and availability of coffee
In June 2024, Canadians paid 1.4% more for coffee compared with June 2023. Although your coffee might cost a little more, there’s lots available if you need more than a cup.
Our annual food availability program measures the amount of food or beverages physically available in Canada for consumption on a per capita basis. We started tracking coffee data in 1966, when there were 88.51 litres of coffee available per Canadian. By 2023, this was up to 107.42 litres, down slightly from an all-time high of 111.82 litres in 2022.
There is plenty of coffee to go around, so if you’re a coffee lover—however you choose to enjoy it—happy sipping!
