Prices for food purchased from stores rise at a faster pace in October

The Consumer Price Index rose 2.0% on a year-over-year basis in October, up from a 1.6% increase in September, as gasoline prices fell to a lesser extent in October (-4.0%) compared with September (-10.7%). Prices for food purchased from stores rose at a faster pace year over year in October (+2.7%) compared with September (+2.4%). This was the third consecutive month price growth for groceries outpaced headline inflation.

Ontario drives growth in residential building construction in September

Investment in building construction rose 2.1% to $21.6 billion in September, following a 0.2% increase in August. Investment in residential building construction was up 2.9% (+$433.4 million) to $15.2 billion in September. Increases were recorded in seven provinces and three territories, led by Ontario (+$232.1 million).

Prices of products manufactured in Canada increase in October

The Industrial Product Price Index (IPPI) rose 1.2% month over month in October. The prices of primary non-ferrous metal products rose 5.5%, leading the monthly increase in the IPPI. Year over year, the IPPI increased 1.1% in October.

Regular Employment Insurance beneficiaries up year over year in September

The number of Canadians receiving regular Employment Insurance (EI) benefits declined by 9,600 (-1.9%) in September. This followed little change in August. The number of EI recipients had been trending up from April 2024 to July 2024. On a year-over-year basis, the number of regular EI beneficiaries was up by 23,000 (+4.9%) in September.

2SLGBTQ+ youth are at increased risk for mental health difficulties and thoughts of suicide

According to the study "Mental health and access to support among 2SLGBTQ+ youth" released in Health Reports, youth who are Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer and those who use other terms related to gender or sexual diversity (2SLGBTQ+) were found to be at higher risk for mental health disorders and having thoughts of suicide in 2022 compared to their cisgender, heterosexual peers in 2022. For example, 27% of 2SLGBTQ+ youth met criteria for a major depressive episode in the year prior to the survey, compared with 11% of cisgender, heterosexual youth.

Financial situation of urban transit agencies still lagging in September

In September 2024, transit agency operating revenues (excluding subsidies) reached $344.8 million, an increase of 6.7% (+$21.5 million) from September 2023. While this total was the highest level recorded since March 2020, it was $24.2 million below the pre-pandemic level in September 2019.

Employed Canadians on the move

According to the 2021 Census of Population, there were more than half a million employed Canadians (approximately 540,000) living in a different province or territory in 2021 from where they lived in 2016, representing 3.1% of the employed population. From 2016 to 2021, managers in public protection services (24.3%), front-line public protection services (10.8%), transportation officers and controllers (9.9%), physicians, dentists and veterinarians (7.9%) and university professors and post-secondary assistants (7.7%) had the highest mobility rates among 141 occupations.
